Mango sambar the name may be look somewhat odd like,i too thought the same but after trying it it was very tangy, delicious recipe. If you are a tangy lover then sure you will definitely like it.Got the recipe from here.I usually make sambar with many vegetable ,first time making it with mango alone.Try it and you will love it.
- Toor dal- 1\3 cup
- Mango cubes-from 1\2 mango
- turmeric powder- 1\4 tsp
- Sambar powder-2 tsp
- Tamarind- 1 small marble size
- Asafoedita- a piece
- salt to taste
- mustard- 1 tsp
- Fenugreek/methi seeds- 1\2 tsp
- Curry leaves
1.Pressure cook toor dal with 4 cup of water, asafoedita, turmeric and 1 tsp of oil for 4 whistles.
2.After the steam is released open and mash it well.
3.Meanwhile soak tamarind in water and extract juice of it.Slice onion & tomato, cut the mango in to medium pieces.
4.Heat a kadai with oil/ghee and temper with the ingredients under " to temper".add onion and tomato and saute for a while till tomato becomes soft.
5.Then pour tamarind juice .water (how much u need),sambar powder, salt and bring to boil. Then drop in ur mango pieces, let it boil from some minutes ,check the mango pieces often as it will be quickly cooked.
6.Once the mango is done, pour the mashed dal and mix well.when the top becomes frothy and about to boil put off flame.
Serve with hot steamed rice any fry.
we had it with kovakkai /ivy gourd fry.
1.The mango variety I used here is "kili mooku mango" type.
2.Keep an eye on mango,if its over cooked the sambar would be a mess.
