Spinach with moong dal makes the best pair and I would say anything with split moong dal will taste superb.This recipe can be used as a side dish for roti or naan else one can just mix it up with hot steaming rice with a  dollop of ghee. It tastes soo good even kids won't refuse it.

  • Spinach /Palak leaves- from one bundle, chopped
  • Split moong dal-1\3 cup
  • onion-1,chopped
  • tomato-1,chopped
  • turmeric powder-1\2 tsp
  • salt- to taste

To grind:
  • coconut pieces-2 tbsp
  • red chilly powder- 1 tsp
  • Cumin/jeera seeds- 1\2 tsp
  • garlic flakes-4 r 5

To temper:
  • oil-1 tsp
  • mustard-1\2 tsp


1.Clean the palak leaves and chop it finely.Wash the dal well.

2.In a pan add dal, chopped palak leaves,onion, tomato,turmeric powder and some water.Cook it till the dal is cooked well.

3.Meanwhile grind all the ingredients given under "to grind" to a paste with some water.

4.When the dal is cooked add the ground mixture to it and cook till it blends well.Add in salt.When the kootu starts to thicken switch.

5.Tadka it with oil & mustard, add to it.

Serve for rice or roti.
