Gothambu Payasam | Whole Wheat Berry -Coconut Milk Pudding | Dessert Recipe

No meal is complete with a cup of dessert which can either be a kheer , pudding ,payasam ,ice cream or even a chocolate.My wish is to a have an Indian sweet/ mithai after a great meat  and at times I prefer payasam to subtle my sweet carving.I can gulp as many as cups I can at any time of the time.When I make payasam at home it is only me who indulge in it as my kids hate payasam/kheer.

This payasam is made with whole wheat berry which is soaked and them pressure cooked.It is them sweetened with jaggery and cooked along with coconut milk.With onam falling tomorrow do try this healthy and easy payasam and serve it for sadya <:-P.

Preparation time : 30 mins ( including soaking time)
Cooking time: under 30 mins
serve: 4-5


  • Wheat berry-1\4 cup
  • jaggery- 1\3 cup (adjust)
  • thin coconut milk-1 cup
  • thick coconut milk-1\2 cup
  • cardamon powder-1\2 tsp
  • ghee- 2 tsp
  • cashew nuts-few


1.Clean the whole wheat and soak in water for 15- 20 minutes.

2.Then pressure cook it with water till it is done.

3.Blend it in  mixer or mash it well.

4.Meanwhile melt jaggery with 1\2 cup water and filter to remove imputities.

5.To the mashed wheat add in thin coconut milk, jagggery syrup and heat it in stove.Add in cardamom powder.

6.When it becomes semi thick low the flame to the lowest and add thick coconut milk.Swirl for few seconds and swtich off.

7.Add in ghee roasted cashew nuts.

Serve as dessert after meal.


1.Don't boil more after adding thick milk as it will curlde.
