Broken wheat khichdi | Samba Rava Khichdi | Easy Breakfast

Scorching heat is unbearable and we feel nothing to eat or cook.Just drinking liquid food makes our tummy feel full and good.So nowadays I have reduced cooking and goes for  some easy quick fixing meal.When it comes for breakfast its only me who eat is as children get up very late and straight away eat their lunch.AS its only for me I opt for upma,khichadi, etc.

You may ask what's the difference in upma & khichdi is its water ratio where in upma we use 1:2 ,to get a  grainy one while in khichdi we use 1:3 or 1:4 and make it semi thick. Chutney goes best with it and if you have a sweet tooth you can also have it with sugar.

  • Broken wheat / samba rava- 1 cup
  • ghee-1/2 tsp
  • oil- 1 tbsp
  • mustard
  • onion-1, sliced
  • green chilly-2
  • ginger chopped-1 tsp
  • tomato-1
  • vegetables-3\4 cup ( i used carrot & beans)
  • turmeric powder-1\2 tsp
  • red chilly powder- 3\4 tsp ( optional)
  • water-3 to 4 cups
  • curry leaves-few
  • salt to taste

 How I made:

1.Roast the broken wheat in 1\2 tsp ghee for few seconds. ( this step is purely optional).Cut all veg and keep ready.

2.Heat oil in the same ,pop out mustard.Then add in chopped onion,green chilly,ginger ,curry leaves and saute.

3.Then add tomato,spiced powder,vegetables and mix it well.Then add in roasted rava,mix.

4.Meanwhile boil water simultaneous ly.When it boil add the needed quantity into the mix.check for salt.

5.Cover and cook till it is done.

Serve hot.


1.Addition of red chilly powder is optional you can avoid if you feel it will spicy.
