Paruppu Usli with step by step pictures.Banana flower with toor dal, cooked and tempered is the main process in making usli.Mostly toor or Bengal gram dal or a mix of these to dal is used but I have used only toor dal.This blogging world has introduced many recipes to me and this is one of it.
- Banana flower, cleaned and chopped-1 cup
- Tur/Toor dal -1\3 cup
- Ginger - 1-inch piece
- Oil-1 tbsp + 1 Tsp
- Mustard-1 Tsp
- Onion-1, finely chopped
- Green chilly-1, chopped
- Turmeric powder-1\2 tsp
- Salt to taste
1.Soak dal in water for 30 mins.Drain and grind into coarse form along with ginger &salt.Keep the chopped banana flower immersed in water.
2.Heat a tsp of oil in a non-stick pan.Add the ground dal paste and saute till it dries up and resembles like breadcrumbs.
3.Heat a tbsp of oil in another deep pan.Pop out mustard seeds, then add chopped onion, green chilly and saute.
4.Then add the chopped banana flower, salt, turmeric powder.Saute.Cover and cook.
5.When done add the roasted dal and saute for a while.Switch off.
Serve as side dish for rice along with any kuzhambu.
